Résumé du cours :

Mobilisation on the basis of gender or ethnicity is more commonly found in the United States. Social movements in France are usually focused on labour and articulated around social issues. Yet, the movement for the defence of the rights of immigrants and the feminist movement have been constant features of the French social struggles in the second half of the 20th century. This class will review successively the Civil Rights Movement in the US, the Chicano movement, anti-colonial struggles, student movements in France and the US, radicalism, black power, feminist movements and immigrant movements. Differences of contexts will be analysed, while the specificity of gender and ethnic claim will be asserted through this class. The course will cover a period from 1945 to 2000
